The Showrunner Shares He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.

The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.

About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

Anyone might to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Has the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… sort of.

“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
