When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid history in a pivotal European match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight place.

At 18 years old, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him playing time in pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.

Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he commented after the win at Manchester.
