The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
A Landmark Season and European Breakthrough
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Influences and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are key strengths. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.
Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
