The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Chronicling Two Dozen Days Behind Bars

The ex-president of France will soon publish a personal account this autumn titled Diary of a Prisoner, chronicling the period spent in jail.

The announcement was made shortly following Sarkozy was released while he appeals the guilty verdict on charges of unlawful coordination in a case to acquire political financing from the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“Inside jail there is nothing to see, and activities are scarce,” he notes in an extract, indicating the book is more about his reflections during seclusion instead of wider commentary on the strained and crisis-hit French prison system.

“I forget silence, which is missing at the prison, where there is constant sound,” he states. “The racket persists relentlessly. However, akin to empty spaces, one’s inner world is strengthened in prison.”

Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle

At his release request hearing, he had appeared remotely from his cell, describing his time inside as exhausting. He had told the court: “I must acknowledge to all the prison staff, who are exceptionally humane, and who helped make this ordeal manageable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It affects one all who experience it due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, who served as France’s president for a five-year term, became the inaugural ex-leader in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure in the French Republic to experience jail.

Before entering jail he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Reading Material

Unconfirmed is did he manage to read and critique the volumes he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, in which an innocent man is sentenced to jail later flees to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

Sarkozy remained secluded due to safety concerns in a space approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at the correctional facility in the city. Guards were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated that he had eaten only yoghurts in prison worried that prison cuisine might have been spat on. He had facilities to cook for himself but refused this, as per accounts. It is uncertain whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Lawyer’s Statements

His attorney, who visited his client each day during the incarceration, informed the court security would be better outside jail than inside. “There were death threats, heard shouts at night plus rapid actions next door as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Legal Proceedings

His incarceration began last month after a Paris court imposed five years in prison for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to secure political donations for his 2007 presidential race.

He maintains his innocence and has appealed against the verdict, and a fresh trial is scheduled for early next year.
