The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.

The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

This news arrives just weeks after he presented his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
