Slot Maintains He Feels Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Loss
Arne Slot admitted that it's understandable for questions to be raised about his position following another heavy loss versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their 9th defeat in 12 matches, marking the club's poorest streak since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were taken apart by the Eredivisie title holders on a difficult night at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I'm fine, I've received significant support from management,” Slot stated.
“It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory naturally but if you are working as a coach and underperforming then it is normal that questions are asked.”
He continued, “I am OK with my role. It is not the first time I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's crucial that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with Club Management
When asked to expand on his discussions with the club's leadership, Slot said:
“There's regular dialogue. They are supportive for the squad and to me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me all the time of the day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “Through standard exchanges I feel the confidence. However I haven’t spoken to them after this defeat so far so let’s see.”
Persistent Failings and Player Response
The manager lamented known failings from his team in their Champions League loss, namely missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was blunter in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the answers. Truthfully, I do not. I’m saying that to everyone,” the midfielder said.
“It's simply not good enough. I don’t even have to wait to consider it. I’m past getting mad inside. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It's tough because I’m playing for the side I follow. I support them, and I’ve seen Liverpool for years.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Reds side enduring a spell of this nature with results like these.”
He stated, “However we still have the crest on our chest. And until it is removed, we'll continue to battle.”
“We’re going to try to help the side return to where it needs to be, show everyone once more what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the best team in the planet.”
“At this moment, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
