Plans for Trump-Putin Talks Shelved Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Talks Suggested

There are "no arrangements" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has announced.

This past week Trump indicated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest soon to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "productive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".

The administration declined to provide additional specifics on why the talks had been put on hold.

Earlier Events

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with insiders indicating the president had urged him to relinquish large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on this week Trump embraced a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Ukraine and EU officials to freeze the hostilities on the present positions.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he stated.

Moscow has frequently resisted against pausing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, suggesting that freezing the front line would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of maximalist demands that involve the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its Western allies.

Zelensky commented discussions about the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader recently preceded reports that the US was preparing to send distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could possibly hit inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had turned out to be a "significant input" in international relations", he remarked.
