Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities issued video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
