Crew Member Shares Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
