A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as sparing holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, provided by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: happy, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Every time, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and cafecito as they toasted the pig's pardon.
